Mongolia is a place of amazing contrast and beauty. I enjoyed the city of Ullanbaatar, with its grand palace, national theatre, fine shops, and cultural places for eating out such as the Belgian cafe. Never had I imagined that I would be sipping one of my favorite Belgian beers at a cafe in Mongolia, but there you have it! And while many tourists head south to the Gobi desert, we headed north to explore the pristine countryside, observing farmers and nomads with their traditional gers (in other countries, “yurts”, or portable circular tents) as we headed to the Chinggis Khaan statue and museum complex. The most lasting impression for me was when we returned to UB and enjoyed a family-style buffet at the Hotel Shangri La, with its grand hallways and gathering places filled with large families and children at play.
